Exit Spirit Energy

Through its subsidiary, Stadtwerke München GmbH (SWM), the City of Munich holds a 31% stake in Spirit Energy, a company that explores and produces oil and gasin the North Sea and sells it on the world markets.Spirit Energyis a joint venturecompany with the British energy supplier Centrica (69%).

In order to stick to the goals of"Climate Neutrality 2035"and to take the climate emergency seriously, the city of Munich must finally take consistent actionsand set a good example: It must no longer participate in the promotion of fossil fuels and should therefore send a strong political signal to other cities and also to the world markets. We therefore call for a binding resolution by the City Council of the City of Munichbefore the end of 2020, which clearly states that:

● SWM is no longer allowed to invest in natural gas and oil exploration and production,

● SWM will not only terminate its participation in Spirit Energy, but also all existing and future participations in natural gas and oil production and explorations as quickly as possible, but at the latest within one year of the city council's decision.

Fossil Free, Fridays For Future and other organizations of the alliance published an additional background paper on December 8th, 2020, which explains in detail the need to exit Spirit Energy as soon as possible.

Lecture (06/29/21)

Divestment - climate-neutral investment and money

with Katja George (350.org) and Johannes Engelhaupt (Fossil Free Munich)

In her presentation, Katja George from 350.org Berlin shows why divestment is necessary, what happens as a result and what global effects divestment (can) have.

Katja George's lecture, "The divestment movement - worldwide and in Germany" in slides is available here(PDF)

Johannes Engelhaupt is a volunteer at Fossilfree Munich and reports in his lecture on economic crime under the title #exitspritienergy. With the investment by Stadtwerke München (SWM) in oil and gas drilling projects north of the Arctic Circle with the Spriti Energy joint venture, the city of Munich is risking public money – as Englhaupt’s presentation shows.

The lecture by Johannes Engelhaupt #ExitSpiritEnergy (Divestment of the City of Munich) is available here(PDF)
