Munich exits coal now!

Munich's "Climate Neutrality 2035"

The Munich-North 2 Heating Coal Power Plant (HKW) represents the largest CO2 emission source of the City of Munich. It still produces electricity and heat from hard coal, causing massive damage to the climate and our future.  Therefore, we demand that it is shut down as quickly as possible.

We want the HKW Nord 2 power plant to stop operating as soon as possible

Together with a broad, diverse and competent alliance of Munich civil society, we have persistently and openly fought for the quickest shutdown of the HKW North 2 power plant.  Now, it is time to start the Munich coal phase-out.

In 2017, the citizens of Munich have decided that the coal-fired power plant can operate only until the end of 2022. Since the successful referendum, Stadtwerke München and the Munich City Council have not developed sufficient renewable heat sources.

The main geothermal heat generator cannot still autonomously guarantee the heat required by the City in case the temperature gets lower than -16°C. In these cases, and when possible failures occur, the HKW North 2 power plant is occasionally needed. Still, it has to run for the entire year because, for technical reasons (onset of dangerous corrosion in case of standstill).

To put an end to this absurd situation, this is what we demand to the Munich city council:

Munich Must act !

The city council must to act !

If you want to keep up the pressure on the Munich city council to finally understand that they have to act, then get active with us. Become a part of Fossil Free Munich, contact us at kontakt@fossilfreemünchen.de or come directly to our next meetings !

  • Coal (person dressed in black): 7 balloons = 6.8 million t COâ‚‚ emissions

  • Natural gas (person dressed in yellow) 22 balloons = 22 million t COâ‚‚ emissions
